Beau Constantia Lucca

This is the third, and yet another fittingly beautiful Beau Constantia Lucca, a classic Bordeaux-style blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Only 25 barrels were produced from beautiful fruit of 9 to 10 year old vines, all planted on Beau Constantia farm. The incredibly healthy and optimally ripe grapes were hand-picked and berry sorted before being conveyed to the fermentation tanks. The cold soak, alcoholic fermentation and extended maceration on the grapes skins lasted for about 25 days before the grapes were pressed using a basket press and the wine transferred to barrel. The wine was then matured in 225 litre French oak barrels (95% new and 5% second fill) for 18 months prior to bottling.

The 2013 LUCCA shows dark plum and Morello cherries on first impression, but is a wine that shows restraint, depth and complexity demanding further exploration. The dense red berry flavour concentration carries onto a succulent palate where polished tannins add to the good texture and structure of the wine. The wine is rich, but also has fantastic minerality and a perfumed freshness that allows for a long, well-defined finish. The wine has been hand-crafted to express the elegance and finesse of these archetypal Bordeaux-varieties and is fittingly named Lucca for all its’ class and beauty.
